City Celebrates Earth Day with Volunteer Projects
Community volunteers invited to help make a difference

SALT LAKE CITY – The Salt Lake City Parks and Public Lands Department and Service in the City Volunteer Program are hosting two community-wide Earth Day Volunteer Projects on Saturday, April 21.

Volunteers are invited to join Parks and Public Lands, the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center and REI at the Bend-in-the-River, 1030 West Fremont Avenue (1100 South), from 9 a.m. – noon for a fun and educational day of giving back to the environment. Volunteers will be involved in planting native plants, tackling invasive species and trail building.

The Bend-in-the-River is a two-acre, urban natural area owned by Salt Lake City along the Jordan River. The Bennion Center works in collaboration with the City to maintain this public green space. Bend-in-the-River serves as a central location for community education on native vegetation and ecology, and supports a venue to keep Salt Lake City's urban community connected to the environment.

The Salt Lake City Parks and Public Lands staff also needs volunteers to help clean up a parcel of land for future community use at 2985 W. Andrew Ave (approx. 1650 South), from 9  a.m. - noon.

The project on Andrew  Avenue is sponsored by Comcast Cable, with participation from Colors of Success and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Each group has worked to recruit volunteers, primarily youth and families, for this project.

The Service in the City Volunteer Program, launched in January 2012, is designed to connect residents with meaningful service projects and volunteer opportunities within Salt Lake City.  To learn more about City volunteer opportunities, call (801) 535-6202 or visit http://www.slcgov.com/volunteer.
