Salt Lake City Council Public Hearing on the Main Street Plaza

December 16, 2002

The Salt Lake City Council will hold a public hearing about the Main Street Plaza on Tuesday. The City Council will take public comment on the issue between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, in the City Council Chamber, Room 315 of the City & County Building, 451 South State Street.

Mayor Ross C. Anderson has proposed two ways to deal with the disposition of a public easement that runs through the plaza located on Main Street between North Temple and South Temple streets. Last week the Mayor proposed a set of time, place and manner regulations for the easement. Monday, the Mayor outlined a second proposal that would extinguish the easement.

Prior to the public hearing the City Council will hold a briefing session on issues involving the proposals. The briefing session will start at 5:30 p.m. in Room 326 of the City & County Building, 451 South State Street. The City Council has invited three speakers to briefing session. The speakers are Mayor Anderson, former Salt Lake City Attorney Roger Cutler, and Alan L. Sullivan, who represents the Corporation of the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. No public comment will be taken during the briefing session, but the meeting is open to the public.

After the briefing session the City Council then will go to the City Council Chamber to conduct the public hearing. To accommodate as many speakers as possible during the three-hour hearing, public comment will be limited to a minute and a half instead of two minutes. People also can submit written comments or e-mail comments. To comment by e-mail, people can send them to council.comments@slcgov.com.

The briefing session and the public hearing will be broadcast live on KUED-TV Channel 7 and SLCTV Channel 17 for cable television subscribers in Salt Lake City and KCPW-FM radio. The Salt Lake Tribune and KSL Radio and TV also will broadcast the briefing and the hearing via their Internet websites.

The City Council also will provide closed-circuit television and audio to an overflow room for people who cannot find seats in the City Council Chamber.

Questions about the format and other items involving the briefing and public hearing may be directed to: Cindy Gust-Jenson or Russell Weeks at the City Council Office. They can be reached by calling 535-7600, 535-6209 or 535-6206.
