Mayor Partners with Salt Lake City School District to Host Green Schools Summit
District recognized for improving energy efficiency in schools
 
SALT LAKE CITY – Mayor Ralph Becker’s office, in partnership with the Salt Lake City School District and the Utah Society for Environmental Education will host the Mayor’s Green Schools Summit on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. at Hillside Middle School, 1825 S. Nevada Street (2350 East) in Salt Lake City.  
 
The Summit will highlight the Utah Green Schools Program, an initiative led by the Utah Society for Environmental Education to recognize and promote sustainable practices in Utah school facilities and curricula. City representatives will also make presentations on the Idle Free Ordinance, Sustainable Transportation and best practices for sustainable strategies, programs and activities in the classrooms.
 
Mayor Becker and Salt Lake City School District Superintendent McKell Withers will greet the press and introduce BonnevilleElementary School students who will present a Recycling Opera to congratulate Salt Lake City SchoolDistrict for being named the 2012 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year.
 
“Our Salt Lake City School District is among the nation’s leaders in innovating energy saving programs and strategies,” said Mayor Becker. “We are proud to partner with Supt. Withers and his staff on continuing to move forward with our shared sustainability goals.”
 
The EPA recently recognized the Salt Lake City School District for strategically managing and improving the energy efficiency of its schools.  The District has saved more than $500,000 through superior energy efficiency and is one of only two districts nationwide to earn the Partner of the Year Award.
